Liana Hearthstone
Liana Hearthstone was an orphan on the streets of Calimport and destined to be yet another thief in a city of thieves when she was caught in the middle of a battle between forces loyal to the two genie lords who laid claim to the region. One group had apparently stolen an artifact from the other, but as they fought, it fell to the ground right in front of the startled girl. Unthinkingly, Liana reached for the fallen crystal, but as soon as she picked it up and clutched it to herself, there was a brilliant flash of light and she found herself in the middle of a towering forest.
The city-born halfling was completely at a loss: there was no such stand of trees within more than 100 miles of the seaside Calimport, for the trees near the city were palms and scraggly shrubs, not massive conifers. The trees were so huge they blotted out the sky, but even if she had been able to see the stars, she wouldn’t then have known how to read them to know where she was. Fortunately, she was soon found by a pair of elven scouts, who brought the lost girl back to their town. Despite having never seen a tree in-person before that fateful day, Liana quickly took to the secrets of the wilds and joined her new friends in protecting their ancient forest home.
Many years later, when the elders of the forest community needed volunteers to travel to the cities of the north and east on a quest for knowledge, the streetwise halfling was happy to repay her adopted home for their kindness.
Traits
“I’m not the bravest halfling, but I’ve never let that stop me from being curious about the world and those who inhabit it. ”
Ideals
“The primal forces of nature must be held in check to prevent the destruction of all else.”
Bonds
“I never knew my parents, but the elves and gnomes who adopted a lost halfling into their fold are my family.”
Flaws
“When the odds get overwhelming, I prefer to save my own skin instead of staying to fight.”
“I Know a Guy”
Liana is new to Waterdeep, but when sailing from Baldur’s Gate, she shared a cabin with a priestess of Lliira, Evaline Snome. As befitted her goddess, Evaline was unfailingly cheerful throughout the journey, even when the ship struggled through three straight days of icy headwinds, and Liana believed she felt the cold less keenly when around her new friend. When they debarked in Waterdeep, Evaline invited Liana to visit her family’s home on Phull Lane.
Friends & Enemies
Liana’s not the only one from her forest home sent out on the same quest, so if her adventures take her beyond Waterdeep, she may cross paths with a seeker dispatched in a previous year who hasn’t yet managed to return home. Even if she doesn’t recognize them personally, the butterfly pendant they share is a symbol of their mission.
