Since she was a little girl, Hanalore Bolewarden had always felt closer to animals than to people, though she liked her family and the people of the nearby village of Hornhollow well enough. The main industry of the village was timber, which meant the Bolewardens had to be vigilant to keep after the humans to replant more than what they took and to steer them away from those trees which sheltered nests, hollows, and burrows filled with baby animals.

Thirty years ago, the animals of the forest began to speak of horrible animals-that-weren’t, and the crows and opossums told of deer and boars left mauled and largely uneaten. The villagers began to whisper of terrifying howls in the night that didn’t sound at all like the wolves the Bolewardens had befriended. The Bolewardens and their wood elf allies in the woods were able to keep the werewolves contained for many years, though warnings about the creatures resulted in the Wood of Sharp Teeth gradually becoming known instead as the Werewoods.

The werewolves settled into the ruined tower at the southern edge of the woods and dug in, continuing to cause problems for the forest’s inhabitants with their excursions deep into the woods. Eventually, Hana’s older brother Caligrim went north to Fort Morninglord to seek the aid of the paladins of Lathander, but it was two years before he returned: he’d found the fort abandoned and paladins of Torm patrolling the area. When he asked for their help, he was escorted to Elturel, where he was then imprisoned and interrogated. After five hundred days in prison, he was abruptly thrown out of the city with a warning to never return and told that, “Those werewolves are Baldur’s Gate’s problem.”

With Cal in no fit state to travel again soon, Hana set out toward Baldur’s Gate.

Traits

“I prefer animals to people, really, and I tend to be shy around others, especially the tall folk.”

Ideals

“We should all aspire to live in harmony with the natural plants and creatures of the world.”

Bonds

“The forest is my home and the animals who live in it are my friends and family.”

Flaws

“When I get nervous, I stammer and can be a little clumsy.”

“I Know a Guy”

Hana’s father is a ranger and her mother is a gifted illusionist, as is Hana’s older brother Cal. Her younger brother Ronibar is still a child, though he has expressed interest in also becoming a ranger.

Friends & Enemies

The Bolewardens have been forced to drive off a number of “claim jumpers”, humans who have come to Hornhollow to take up the lucrative logging trade and then attempted to defy the gnomes’ mandates for the peace and sustainability of the forest. Settlers quickly learn that it isn’t easy to cut down a tree when a swarm of angry badgers is attacking.
