Pendella “Penny” Graesturm
Pendella Ringdel had always dreamed of leaving Lantan and going on an adventure in the wider world, but then Lantan went on an adventure of its own, and she missed her chance. The onset of the Spellplague was a time of immense chaos for the people of the displaced island, and with the deaths of nearly half their population in the calamity, a time of great sorrow and resolve. With her magic no longer working, Penny set aside her wider ambitions, married a shy gnome lad named Forwindle Graesturm, and settled into a life of domesticity.
Forwindle was a brilliant alchemist though absent-minded, and Penny often helped him with his day-to-day decoctions. She also cooked, cleaned, made minor repairs around the house, tended a garden containing herbs for both the kitchen and the lab, and continued her studies in cartography, marveling as much at what Abeir and Toril had in common as what set them apart. The couple had three children and Forwindle was a devoted father, albeit still an absent-minded one. One by one, the children grew up and moved out to start their own careers and households, but no one left Lantan for any part of the strange and often-hostile world of Abeir.
Then, just as suddenly as Lantan had been whisked away from Toril, it was returned. By now, Forwindle had a mechanical assistant in his lab and Penny had hired a housekeeper so she had time to pursue her own interests and to spend time with her children and newborn grandchild. While visiting baby Roonfaddle, her daughter Fernalda put the idea in her head that now was the time for Penny to finally see the world. She talked it over with the other children and Forwindle, and to her delight, they were all agreed: though none of them desired to leave Lantan themselves, Penny deserved to see the world.
Traits
“I tend to put the needs of others ahead of my own, but I’m learning to listen to what I want. Though I’ve lived all my life in a city, I feel at home in nature.”
Ideals
“I’m at my happiest discovering new wonders.”
Bonds
“I left a husband, three children, and a grandchild on Lantan, but I intend to return once I’ve had my fill of adventure.”
Flaws
“Some have accused me of being a worry-wart, but you try raising three children in a house full of explosive chemicals!”
“I Know a Guy”
The current Lantar—the top diplomat of Lantan—is Aidon Ingurwest, a human priest of Gond whom Penny practically raised alongside her own children. Aidon’s duties take him all across Faerûn as he re-establishes Lantan’s connections with the wider world.
Friends & Enemies
Penny’s older brother Barigar Ringdel left Lantan only a few years before the Spellplague struck so he could pursue his interests in ancient dwarven metal forging techniques. Could he still be alive, and if so, where is he?
