Korinna “Kori” Harpell
Korinna is a Harpell, and for those who know what that means, that should be warning enough.
The Harpells are a family of wizards who have called the village of Longsaddle home for many generations, and their hilltop homestead, the Ivy Mansion, is a sprawling complex of disparate architectural styles as varied and eccentric as the wizardly family itself. Warded practice rooms and laboratories keep anyone from accidentally destroying portions of the house by magical mishap, though of course accidents happen outside of those rooms, too.
It’s become an unspoken rite of passage in the family that when a Harpell feels she is ready, she leaves Longsaddle for an adventure that will shape the rest of her life. If she survives it, then perhaps one day she’ll return to Longsaddle to help train the next generation of Harpells. Most wait until they’ve mastered their first fireball spell, but Korinna is eager to start her adventure, and she figures knowing how to cast a good shield is far more important.
Traits
“There’s little that feels better than knowing something which turns out to be useful for someone else, which means learning whatever I can. I don’t use magic for everything, but if magic can make it easier or more convenient, then why do it any other way?”
Ideals
“Magic is at its greatest when it’s used for beneficial purposes, such as acts of protection or creation.”
Bonds
“Having lost my parents at a young age, I am devoted to my sister and the rest of our very large, very quirky family.”
Flaws
“Some people say I’m too careful, but I don’t see how that could ever be a bad thing.”
“I Know a Guy”
Kori’s older sister Kenneally is a very gifted wizard who is slightly less prone to the eccentricities of much of the family, and has been labeled a genuine war hero for her part in the reclaiming of Gauntlgrym. Aside from Kenneally, there are dozens of Harpell cousins of varying degrees of aptitude ranging from Aubrey—who can barely cast a detect magic spell without setting something alight—to Penelope—considered to be the most powerful wizard in the family, though the return of Malchor following the Second Sundering may place Penelope as second-best.
Friends & Enemies
Some feuds never die, and the Harpells have been engaged in an on-again-off-again war with the Talonmist wizards of Westbridge since the 13th century DR, though none of the Harpells recall what started it. The Talonmist family and their home disappeared entirely during the Spellplague, leaving the Harpells to think the feud at long last ended, but when the Weave came back, so did the Talonmists and their centuries-old grievances with the Harpells.
