Opal Olembor
Opal’s father Orville came to Waterdeep with naught but an infant daughter and a broken heart, or at least that’s the way he always tells the story. In truth, he also arrived with a sizable sum of money, though he made a show of using his “nearly-last coppers” to pay for his and his daughter’s passage from Baldur’s Gate aboard the Merry Morkoth. The ship sailed near the island city-state of Orlumbor in its passage, and Orville decided he liked the name of the place, so when they docked at Waterdeep, a small illusion made his name appear to be Olembor to the dockmaster. He then generously paid two gold coins to secure their residency tax for a full year, then sauntered into Waterdeep with a new identity and a new life.
Clever Orville soon found work as a magical advisor to the Lathkules—a noble family of Waterdeep—and he raised Opal in the lap of luxury. He also let her in on the secrets of his trade: divination magic was unreliable and seldom provided definitive or actionable advice, so the key was to interpret the responses with dramatic flare, and a little smoke and mirrors to make the casting itself seem more powerful never hurt, either. One could even be just as vague in response as the divination itself had been, but an air of mystery and wisdom could sell even that.
Now that Opal’s old enough to strike out on her own, she’s taken all of her father’s lessons to heart. While she’s not sure where she’s going or what she hopes to accomplish, she’ll be doing it with style, drama, and the absolute confidence of someone who does know exactly what she wants from life!
Traits
“I don’t lie about everything, just about things that don’t matter or that I don’t think you need to know. I’m actually very honest once you get to know me.”
Ideals
“Life isn’t fair, so I refuse to play fair.”
Bonds
“I’m young, free-spirited, and I have all the world ahead of me. Why be tied down to a singular purpose?”
Flaws
“Some say I’m flighty and indecisive, but that’s only because I hate committing to something without having a way back out of it.”
“I Know a Guy”
Opal’s father Orville is a skilled diviner who works for the Lathkule family. He’s showy and dramatic, but Opal knows how to see through his act to get to the real heart of what he’s able to find out with his spells.
Friends & Enemies
The Lathkule family is a bitter rival of the Massalan family, as they have similar interests in gems and fine jewelry. The Massalan family has a recent history of being involved in weapons smuggling and an attempt to build a private army, though of course they’ve publicly denied any such association.
